Darbari Kaahnaraa (kahnara) is a very somber raga with a majestic appeal. (Darbaar means the royal court). It is said that Tansen, the favorite singer of Rajah Akhbar introduced this raga to the king. Its details are as follows:

Arohi/Avarohi: S R g m p d n S' | S' d n P m P g m R S
Pakar: S R R S, 'd 'n S, R S
Emotively: Solemn, regal, meditative moods

Originally, this raga was known simply as "Kaahnaraa" The name Darbari was probably added by Tansen himself. The main sphere of activity in this raga is in the lower and middle octaves. In the arohi the note Ga komal is used in a weak manner and a slow vibrato (andolan) on this note helps enhance its musical swaroop. The association of the notes Ni and Pa sounds pleasing. Its Vaadi swar is Re and Samvadi is Pa and playing time is relegated to Midnight.

Chalan: S R R S, 'n S R 'd 'n 'P, 'm 'P 'd 'n S | S R m P d n P, m P d n P, m m n P n g, g m P g m R R S
